The Club "Wells City Archers" was formed in 1964 and shoots on the Athletics Ground, Rowdens Road, Wells, Somerset. The Club is affiliated to the Wells Sports Club, and to the Regional Archery associations. It is also affiliated to the national body for archery in the UK, the Grand National Archery Society, (GNAS), which body provides Public Liability insurance, as well as overseeing the administration and development of archery nationally and internationally.

Members are generally active at the Club and Tournaments, of which there are many locally and nationally during the summer months.

Outdoor shooting is carried out over varying distances, the maximum distances for men being 100 yards/90 metres and for women 80 yards/70 metres. Various rounds* are shot, starting at the longest distance and decreasing as the round progresses. Rounds are the basis of competitive archery, whether it is competition with other archers or just competition with oneself.

During the winter months, outdoor shooting is confined mainly to weekends if the weather and daylight allows, and activities tend to become focused on indoor shooting. The Club shoots in the Rifle Range on the Athletic Ground, normally from October to the end of April, and on two nights each week. The distance shot is 20 yards/18 metres on small diameter target faces and there are recognised rounds and postal competitions.
