Redgrave to turn back time

Sir Steve Redgrave will be reunited with his Sydney 2000 team-mates next month as the historic "Redgrave 5th Gold" race is recreated to raise money for children in areas affected by December’s tsunami earthquake disaster.

For the first time since their victory in the coxless four in Sydney, Sir Steve Redgrave, Sir Matthew Pinsent, James Cracknell and Tim Foster will compete together in the original boat, in the National Lottery Legends Sprint.

The race will take place during the Rowing World Cup on Saturday 28th May at Dorney Lake, Eton. The British four will be joined by crews from Italy, Austria, Slovenia, New Zealand and the USA- who all competed in the 2000 final. That famous race saw the GB crew win gold by a margin of just 0.38 seconds ahead of the Italians.

The National Lottery Legends Sprint was conceived by Redgrave to help who said, "After the Sydney final, I never thought I would compete with these great men again. The chance to do so against such talented competition is enough of an incentive for me to get back in a boat. Being able to raise money for children whose lives have been devastated by the tragedy only adds to the desire."

Matthew Pinsent went on to win his fourth Olympic gold at Athens last year, before following Redgrave into retirement and James Cracknell, who also won gold in 2004 along with Pinsent, is taking a year away from the sport. Both, however, were persuaded by Redgrave to take part.

"I thought I wouldn’t be returning to the water for 12 months," Cracknell said, "but the Legends Sprint was an opportunity that I could not turn down."

Tim Foster is now involved in UK Sport’s Elite Coaching Programme. He too is inevitably excited about recapturing the spirit of Sydney.

"I know they won’t need any motivation to regain that competitive edge," he said, and we’re all looking forward to training together to see if the magic is still there!"

The race will be broadcast live on BBC Grandstand at 12.20pm on the 28 May, and donations towards the National Lottery Legends Sprint can be made now by logging on to the web site , by calling 0870 756 7979 or texting the word DONATE to 81333
