Rugby League Player on Target for Bowls Triumph!

4th November 2005

engage Mutual Assurance, title sponsor of the engage International Open bowls competition and Rugby League’s Super League, brought their two very different sports sponsorship projects together in a unique event to raise money for the Carers UK charity - the ‘Target Bowls Challenge’.

Great Britain and St Helens Rugby League forward Nick Fozzard took to the rink at Ponds Forge in Sheffield, to receive some top tips from bowling World No 1 Andy Thomson.

The charity head to head gave novice bowler Fozzard a chance to learn the calmer art whilst performing under pressure in front of the BBC television cameras to raise money for a good cause.

‘It’s a real honour to meet a such an accomplished sportsman and it was interesting to learn that we had a lot in common. Our games couldn’t be more different - but rising to the challenge when the heat is on, is essential in both sports. It was interesting to see how well Nick took to bowling - but I don’t think he should hang up his Rugby League boots just yet!’  said Thomson.

Rugby League player Fozzard, who has never tried bowls before, was delighted to lend his hand in raising much needed funds for Carers UK, a charity supported by engage Mutual Assurance.   Carers UK is the leading campaigning, policy and information organisation for carers, supporting over half a million carers in the UK.

Fozzard said ‘Appearing at the engage International Open was a novelty for me and helping to raise funds for Carers UK at the same time was fantastic.   Rugby League and bowls are such different sports and the demands are poles apart, however it was great for me to take a break from my Gillette Tri-Nations preparations with the Great Britain squad. ’
