Ashbourne Cup results and Ashbourne All-Star team announced

26th February 2006

The sizeable crowd in attendance at the Gaelic Grounds for the Ashbourne tournament were served up a feast of camogie yesterday when both finals ended with only a point between the teams. Three-in-a-row champs UL defeated UCD in the Cup while and Cork IT overcame the Garda College in the Shield.

Host college UL got off to a flying start in the Cup final, laying siege to the UCD goalmouth in the opening minutes, before Cork star Jennifer O’Leary opened their account with a pointed 45 in the sixth minute. Angela Walsh and Aislinn Connolly added to UL’s lead with well-taken points. Rena Buckley opened the scoring for UCD after a probing run in the twelfth minute, adding a long-range free from the 65 soon after. UCD came into their own in the 22nd minute, when a powerful ground shot from Susie O’Carroll hit the back of the UL net, to keep UCD in touch with the champions. The half closed with two further points for UL – one resulting Anna Geary finding Cork teammate Jennifer O’Leary with a superb pass – leaving the half time score at UL 0-8, UCD 1-3.

The early moments of the second half was UCD’s time to dominate, with captain Emilie Darmody pointing in the second minute after a penetratng ball from Ciara Lucey. To this they added a Rena Buckley free, as well as a point from Susie O’Carroll which was initially mistaken by the umpire for a goal. UL reasserted themselves, however, with three pointed frees from a reliable Jennifer O’Leary, followed up by points from Edel Maher and Angela Walsh. With four minutes of normal time remaining and with a cushion of four points, UL looked to be safe; but UCD, led by a superb Rena Buckley, rallied, winning and converting three frees. It was not the Dublin side’s day, however, and UL held out on a scoreline of: UL 0-13, UCD 1-9.

Meanwhile, the Ashbourne Shield final earlier in the day proved to be an equally exciting game, with Cork IT defeating Ashbourne newcomers, the Garda College, by a single point. It proved to be a good day for goalkeepers, with CIT’s Gillian Harrington and Garda keeper Therese Keoghan both having superb games and saving their respective teams on numerous occasions. Brenda Hanney opened the scoring for CIT in the second minute with a well-taken point, while at the other end of the field, Marie O’Connor was dominant in the first half, scoring four points from play to put the Garda College in poll position, leaving the halftime score at: Garda College 0-5, CIT 0-2.

Marie O’Connor added another point to her tally within the first minute, but CIT responded strongly with a succession of points from Deirdre Delaney, Cora Hennessy and Emer O’Sullivan. Two excellent points by Louise Young put the Gardaí a point ahead with 14 minutes remaining, but it would not be until the last minute of normal time that CIT would equalise with a pointed 45 from Deirdre Delaney. CIT laid siege the Garda goal for four minutes into stoppage time, when Shona Cunningham fired over a point to leave the final score of this exciting final at: Cork IT 0-9, Garda College 0-8.

At the Ashbourne banquet at the Woodlands Hotel, Adare, UL’s Amanda O’Regan was named player of the tournament. The Ashbourne All Stars awards were as follows: Anna Geary, Amanda O’Regan and Angela Walsh (UL); Rosanna Kennelly (WIT); Catherine O’Loughlin, Sharon Daly, Rena Buckley and Louise Mahoney (UCD); Jenny Duffy and Cora Hennessy (CIT); Michelle Shortt and Marie O’Connor (Garda College); Laura Linnane (NUI Galway); Rachel Moloney and Collette Desmond (UCC).
