The Team England men’s triples lawn bowls team made the perfect start at Melbourne 2006, winning both of their preliminary round matches on day one of the Games.
The trio of Mervyn King (Fakenham, Norfolk), Rob Newman (Reading) and Andy Thomson (London) beat Scotland 11-6, 11-6 in their first match of the tournament and then beat Norfolk Island 11-2, 9-9 in their second round robin match.
King said: “We’ve made a good start and if we can win against Jersey tomorrow we’ll be on our way.”
England’s women’s triples also started their campaign brightly, beating Wales 8-7, 4-9, 2-0, but then went down 16-3, 5-10, 0-2 to Malaysia.
The men’s and women’s pairs also suffered setbacks in their opening contests. The men went down to Malta in a tie-breaker and the women lost 5-8, 5-12 to Malaysia.
