Gold Charter Stourbridge Lawn Tennis and Squash Club are once again proving just how successful racketball has become with their annual ‘Daytime Racketball Finals.’ Across the season over 90 members (including 25 tennis players) compete is 18 daytime racketball leagues which are in addition to their 11 evening and weekend and seven doubles leagues! The players’ final standings in the daytime leagues determine entry into this successful competition.
Dedicated volunteer Rachel Hubble (pictured, right) is to thank for the organisation of the event that begins with 50 competitors who are whittled down to 16 finalists in no less than 8 categories; Men’s, Ladies, A, B and a plate final for each. Alongside prizes and trophies for the winners and runners up, the racketball section at Stourbridge have a ‘Roger Turner’ award for services to racketball and this year it went to a very worthy recipient; Christine Allen. Christine (pictured, left) has volunteered her services as racketball Chair for not one but two years, has continued to run the racketball doubles leagues and even introduced a computerised system, making it a lot easier and faster for the league co-ordinators each month. Congratulations Christine for being presented with this special award.
Racketball at Stourbridge has been running for over 25 years and has significantly grown in popularity ~ so much so that the combined daytime, evening and weekend and doubles leagues now succeed the number of squash leagues at the Club. The Daytime Finals certainly give an insight into the social aspect of the sport as plenty of players remained to watch all of the finals and stay for a few drinks and lunch afterwards. This is one of the reasons why Stourbridge has continued to thrive and maintain its healthy, friendly Club atmosphere day and night. It is a truly positive example of a Club who are reaping the benefits of embracing racketball and working hard to ensure its success well into the future.
