English Federation of Disability Sport has today gone 'live'
20th May 2009SportFocus is delighted to announce that English Federation of Disability Sport has today gone 'live' with their eLearning project for the Advocacy and Activity Buddy Scheme (AABS). This is a project run by the EFDS to support clubs and physical activity groups to set up volunteer programmes which help support disabled people become more active.
As we all know, volunteers are an important part of Sport and potentially even more so within disability sport. With the number of volunteers looking for interesting opportunities increasing rapidly this is a great time to focus these volunteers into disability sport and get more disabled people participating.
The AABS online volunteer website is aimed at training people to support disabled people within any kind of sport or physical activity environment. It is not sport specific so is intended to cover as wide a section of volunteers as possible. As the training is based online it reduces the amount of time required by clubs to train their volunteers and makes training to be a volunteer more accessible, regardless of a person’s ability. The training covers a number of topics from understanding what volunteering is to the skills and knowledge needed to support a disabled person and what a volunteer should expect in return. It is split into 6 sections with questions after each section. The training can be accessed as and when the volunteer is able to do so and does not have to be completed all in one session.
(It is important to note that this training does not remove the requirement for the staff induction and health and safety training which should be undertaken by all staff members, whether paid or unpaid.)
