Britain’s top disabled shooters have been in action all weekend at the Wheelpower National Shooting Championships in Stoke Mandeville, Buckinghamshire.

Two medals were awarded in each event – the NRSA (National Small-bore Rifle Association) medals and the ISCD (International Shooting Committee for Disabled) medals. Those who are not classified under the ISCD rules were eligible to compete only for the NSRA medal while those classified in ISCD could compete for both.

In the R1 10m air rifle standing SH1 men, Kent’s Nathan Milgate took the ISCD and NRSA gold, with Paralympic gold medallist Matthew Skelhon taking both silver medals. Rising star Nigel Brown finished in bronze medal spot for the ISCD standings, while Neil Brittain finished third in the NRSA standings.

Milgate and Skelhon then repeated this success in the R3 10m air rifle prone, again finishing one, two respectively for the ISCD standings and the NRSA results. Surrey’s Mandy Pankhurst took the ISCD bronze, while the NRSA bronze went again to Neil Brittain.

There was gold for Bristol’s Karen Butler in the R2 10m air rifle SH1 (NRSA and ISCD), while Pankhurst added to her bronze medal with a silver, finishing second behind Butler.

Beijing Paralympian James Bevis took gold in both the NRSA and ISCD R5 10m air rifle prone, while newcomers Richard Davies and Nicola Porrill took the ISCD and the NRSA silvers respectively. Richard Davies was then awarded the bronze in the NRSA competition while youngster Adam Fontain, from Essex, took the ISCD bronze.

Davies had further success in the R4 10m air rifle standing SH2, this time picking up the top spot in the ISCD contest before taking silver in the NRSA standings. Robert Mcleary finished with the ISCD silver and the NRSA bronze, while Bevis added to his golds with ISCD bronze. But it was newcomer Nicola Porrill, who took gold in the NRSA competition to add to her personal medal haul.

In the R6 50m small bore rifle prone English match – the results were the same for both standings. Stephen Robertson took the gold, with Milgate in silver medal position and Karen Butler finishing in third.

In the air pistol competitions Chris Summerscales beat Adrian Bunclark into second, with his gold medal winning performance in the P1 10m air pistol SH1 ISCD. Andy Gardiner took bronze.

And there was gold for Jean Guild in the women’s competition. She beat Maxine Erasmus to the ISCD gold in the P2 10m air pistol SH1.

Two awards were also given out during the weekend – with pistol shooter Jean Guild, from Southport, taking the ‘Most Improved Shooter of the Year’ accolade, while Nicola Porrill was awarded the Isobel Newstead Trophy, in honour of the late Paralympic gold medallist.
