10 British medals at the recent SKU British Open, supported by Karate England, which took place in the English Institute of Sport Stadium, Sheffield. That’s exactly what four Northern Ireland karate students achieved.
All of them: Chloe Mackenzie, Sarah Shields and David and Craig Brashaw who all train at the Carnalea Karate Club in Bangor, came home with a bag of medals.
Top winner of the day was Craig who lifted two gold and one silver.  Craig claimed gold in the under 12 kata event, another gold fighting as a guest on the Shikon Under 12 B team (Liam Powell, Jamie Carroll & Karl Garside) who defeated the Shikon A team in a very exciting final and silver in his individual kumite (sparring).
Next up in results was Sarah who won the Under 12 girls sparing, defeating team-mate Chloe in the final, taking third in the kata and also leading the Under 12 team with Chloe and Emma Evans from Shikon, to silver in kumite. In addition to Chloe’s silvers for team and individual kumite, she also claimed a well deserved third silver in the kata event.
Veteran and coach of the team, David claimed gold in his individual kata event, but ultimately was more than proud for his students. He added 'This was quite a nerve wrecking event for these students.  British events are tough, but without doubt these students had, what can only be described as an amazing British Open.  Both Craig and Chloe have now been ranked in the top three in their last two British events, and from what we saw in Sheffield, Sarah is not far behind them'.
