Impressive Baltacha into US Open Round Two
30th August 2010Elena Baltacha has completed an impressive first round victory in the women's main draw of the US Open in New York.
The British No.1 defeated Petra Martic of Croatia 6-2, 6-2 in just over an hour on court 17 at Flushing Meadows.
Baltacha broke her opponent twice in each set as she won each of them in just over 30 minutes.
The Briton was effective with her first serve hitting four aces and winning 91% of her first serve points.
The win will be sweet revenge for Baltacha against the player who came put her out of Wimbledon after the Briton had been up 6-2, 5-4.
"I stayed really positive and I just kept putting her under pressure. I played very well," said Baltacha afterwards. "I really did believe in myself and not at any stage in the match did I let up."
In round two Baltacha will face Czech opposition in the form of either Lucy Hradecka or the No.27 seed Petra Kvitova.
The British No.1 was the only Brit in action on day one of the US Open, in singles or doubles. Andy Murray and Anne Keothavong will begin their campaigns on Tuesday or Wednesday.
