Murray off to a strong start at US Open
1st September 2010Andy Murray has made an impressive start to his 2010 US Open campaign with a straight sets win over Lukas Lacko in round one.
The British No.1 dominated his opponent in each set as he defeated his Slovakian opponent 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
The world No. 4 broke his opponent six times in a match that lasted just under two hours, losing his serve only once.
However after the match Murray was quick to point out the toughness of the condition he had endured after playing in temperatures almost reaching 100 degrees.
"I managed to get through in straight sets so I'm pleased, but it was a lot tougher than the score suggests," said the Briton, "They were brutal conditions."
After defeating the world No. 71 Murray will now face Jamaican opposition in the form of Dustin Brown who beat Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo 6-4, 7-6(6), 7-5.
The world No.4 will also have noted the defeat of Tomas Berdych, the man who put him out of the French Open and finished runner up at Wimbledon, after the Czech seventh seed was beaten in straight sets by Michael Llodra of France.
However there was disappointment for top British doubles players Colin Fleming & Ken Skupski who went down in straight sets in round one of the men's doubles.
Flemski lost out 6-2, 7-6(6) to Horacio Zeballos & Eduardo Schwank of Argentina despite having their chances to level the match by taking the second set.
The remaining British player in action besides Murray is women's British No.1 Elena Baltacha who is due to play Petra Kvitova (CZE) [27] in their second round encounter on Wednesday.
