Final Day British Land Junior National Ski Championships

9th April 2004

For the new British Junior champions James Barcock and Lynn Sharp the 'end of term' could not come quick enough, but when it did today - the final race of their long, seven month winter season on The British Land Alpine Ski Team - there were another brace of titles each to complete their significant silverware bounties from The British Land Junior National Ski Championships which finished today in Meribel.

Barcock, 19, (Bath) whose final race as a Junior this was, admitted later that he had needed only to put down a pair of safe runs to be sure of winning the Boys slalom title. Having missed out on the early season with back problems, Barcock will have a short break before resuming his strength and fitness conditioning, using the extensive facilities at Bath University.

In today's Slalom championship he finished over two seconds clear of Marc Telling (19, Guildford) who came back with a strong second run to finish runner up.

" I had kind of lost a bit of confidence over the last two or three weeks but it was a case of nothing to lose and I just let it go and skied like I can, so as well as finishing second I feel much happier in myself." Said Telling who is a leading member of The British Home Nations Development Squad. With wins in both disciplines Barcock assumed a commanding lead to retain the overall title he won last year in Pitztal, Austria. Sharp had a much tougher girls slalom.

After the first heat she was lying only four hundredths of a second behind Pam Thorburn with Perth's Melissa Piper lying third. Thorburn could not match Sharp's fluency on the second heat and had to settle for second place.
