John Inverdale to open British University Games
3rd April 2004Sports presenter John Inverdale will officially open the 10th British University Games, which begin at the University of Bath on Monday (5th April).
Inverdale is President of the British Universities Sports Association (BUSA), which is running the event, one of the major competitions on the university sports calendar.
He will address an audience of around 500 people, including athletes and coaches from across the UK, and will then officially open the Games.
Ged Roddy, Director of Sport at the University of Bath, will also address the audience, welcoming competitors and BUSA representatives to the University.
Cllr Les Kew, Chairman of Bath and North East Somerset Council, and Cllr David Hawkins, Mayor of Bath, will also attend the opening ceremony, along with Lenny Barry, Chairman of BUSA.
The opening ceremony takes place in the main sports hall at the University of Bath's recently expanded Sports Training Village. It gets underway at 5pm on Monday, with the sporting action between teams from English, Northern Irish, Scottish and Welsh universities beginning afterwards and concluding on Thursday (8th April).
Several University of Bath athletes will be action during the tournament, including TeamBath footballers Kevin Watson and Marc Canham, netball player Rachel Dunn, currently a member of the senior England squad, and TeamBath Romans basketball player Barry Lamble.
Admission to watch what should be a feast of sport costs just 50p per day for adults and is free for children under 16.

Netball and badminton competitions will take place in the new main sports hall at the Sports Training Village, with basketball in the Founder Sports Complex, with hockey and football on the outdoor pitches.
