The Hitchin Nomads Cycling Club is based in the old market town of Hitchin, 35 miles north of London in the UK, and was founded in 1931 as a touring cycling club. Over the years, it has grown and evolved until today we have a club that aims to cater for all aspects of cycling. There is also an active social side to the club.
Club Activities
Time Trialling: The club is affiliated to the RTTC (Road Time Trials Council) and holds regular time trials on Tuesday evenings throughout the summer. These are usually on a course of 10 or 25 miles around Southill and Old Warden, north of Shefford. In 1999 the Nomads beat the Bedford Road and the Icknield Road Clubs in the local Inter-Club Championship.
In a time trial, the riders start off at one minute intervals, aiming to complete the course in the fastest time. Everybody can take part, as even the slowest riders can compete in their quest for a PB (personal best time). Although the atmosphere is friendly and informal, these events are conducted strictly in accordance with rules laid down by the RTTC. For those with masochistic tendencies, there are the hill climbs at Charlton and Sharpenhoe to look forward to in the autumn. (A hill climb is a short time trial up a road on a steep hill).
Members can also take part in a very extensive program of open events (more than 2000!) organised by clubs throughout the country, and also inter-club events.
Road Racing: The club has a growing number of members who participate in mass start races held on closed circuits, such as Eastway in London, or on public road circuits.
Riders are classified into categories to ensure that those with similar abilities race together, details of all races can be found in the British Cycling Federation Handbook and the cycling press.
Social and Touring: The regular Sunday morning club run is a popular social ride to one of a number of cafes around about twenty miles away from Hitchin. The runs start from Market Place in the centre of Hitchin at 9am on most Sundays throughout the year, (9.30am for the first six Sundays of the year). Then there are the occasional day and week-end trips to such places as The Isle of Wight, the Suffolk coast and Calais (taking advantage of £2 Sunday ferry fares).
The main social occasion is the weekly Clubroom, currently held on Wednesday evenings (8.30pm) at The Settlement in Nevells Road, Letchworth. This is an informal get together where members can chat and discuss events etc. Special attractions are organised occasionally, such as talks, videos and demonstrations.
