New Race Team for Young Riders in Milton Keynes
"The Milton Keynes Cycling and Triathlon Club (MKC&TC) are today delighted to announce the launch of their new official youth development squad, 'Team Keyne'."During the past three years literally hundred's of 5 to 16 year olds living in and around Milton Keynes have been introduced to different forms of cycle sport by the Mobil Youth Challenge. 'Team Keyne' will help to develop the enthusiasm and talent of those young riders to national and international level.
Local companies have come forward with financial support for the team. The major sponsor is Queensway Print whose contribution to 'Team Keyne' has been matched by Sportsmatch, the govenment's sponsorship incentive scheme. Additional funding comes from Abbeygate Developments, DVR Electrical Wholesale, Phil Corley Cycles and New City Heating, the latter two sponsors having been associated with MKT&TC for a number of years. Madison Cycles have provided equipment.
Already the nucleus of the team has raced together at international level taking part in last year's 3 day Manchester International Youth tour where four riders, then competing for the MKC&TC, acheived top ten placings in their respective age groups.
That event is on the team's race schedule for 1999 as is the Norwich International Youth Tour. The team will also be represented at all of this years National Championship races and subject to funding, plan to compete in some continental races as the season progresses.
Team Manager Bob Varney, a recently qualified member of the Association of British Cycle Coaches, will look after the riders throughout the year and has arranged for the first training workshop to take place in the middle of February. "This is a great opportunity for these youngsters" he said. "Some of them have already shown that they've got great talent and I hope that being part of 'Team Keyne' will give them the chance to develop even further."
