About the Club
Club HistoryThe Hemel Hempstead Cycling Club was formed in 1933 when a group about 20 local cyclists decided that there was a need in the town for a club. This has since been vindicated as the membership has steadily increased over the past 65 years and is currently approximately 80 strong.
During this time the Club has produced champions at local, national and international levels. Members have ridden in the Olympic and Commonwealth Games with one bronze medal won in the Olympics in Montreal, 1976. Several members have subsequently had distinguished professional careers.
The Club caters for all the differing aspects of cycling, whether it is leisure or competitive. We always encourage and support new members to 'have-a-go' at a different aspect of this many-sided sport, making use of the wide range of facilities and experience in the Club.
Racing
Many Club members are involved in racing, on the road, time trialling, on the track, in cyclo-cross and on mountain bikes. Members range from Schoolboys and Girls from 12 years old to Veterans of over 40 years of age. There are coaching facilities available at all levels for all branches of the sport.
Runs & Touring
Regular Sunday rides are organised for leisure and training purposes, on-road and off-road. Members also participate in longer touring trips with overnight stays. We also have day rides in France and the Isle of Wight. For further information contact the General Secretary.
Clubnight
Our clubnights are held in our own Clubhouse at the Nash Mills Recreation Centre, Nash Mills Lane, Kings Langley, adjacent to the Old Red Lion on the A4251 and is open every Monday and Thursday evening at 7.30pm. with the exception of Bank Holidays. We organise social evenings such as quizzes, video evenings, talks or just socialise by having a chat in the comfort. There are also games and keep-fit equipment.
Club Promotions
During the summer months (approx. May through to August) on Thursday evenings we move from our Clubhouse to the Great Gaddesden Parish Hall where we hold our series of weekly Club Evening 10 mile Time Trials.
Also we promote two Open Road Races, two Open Time Trials, a Reliability Trial and also events in association with other Clubs.
The Club is affiliated to the main cycling bodies, The British Cycling Federation (BCF), the Road Time Trials Council (RTTC), the British Cyclo-Cross Association (BC-CA), the Cyclist's Touring Club (CTC) and the British Schools Cycling Association (BSCA).
New Members
Prospective members of 12 years of age and older are welcome to join us in the Clubroom or on a Sunday ride before deciding to become a member, but please note that in order to race you do have to be a member of the Club for insurance purposes.
We would especially advise younger members to come and talk to experienced Club Members before purchasing a bicycle. Bicycles are expensive items with more complexity than they initially appear to have and an unwise buy can cause disappointment.
