The Shaftesbury Cycling Club is based at Mountnessing in Essex (between Brentwood and Chelmsford) and boasts over 160 members covering a very wide age range (6 months to 87 years). Longevity of membership is certainly revered and in the last few years one member celebrated 70 years continuous membership and two 50 years.
Ladies have only been admitted since 1973 but already several have clocked up 20 years' membership.
Members participate in most areas of cycling activity and the Club promotes over 30 Club time trials each season as well as 6 Open Time Trials (the 50 having started in 1906), an Open Senior Road Race, a series of Off-Road Cyclo-Cross events and a very popular series of Audax UK Randonnées.
Details of all these can be found on this Website. Most of the current active members live in Essex but there are still strong ties to its founding area of East London where in 1888 a group of cyclists formed themselves into the Shaftesbury Cycling Club.
Why the Shaftesbury? - after all London was and still is a long way from Dorset. Well the Hall where they met was founded by Lord Shaftesbury, the 7th Earl, and the Club was supported by and is named after him. Not only has the name remained unchanged all these years but the Club Colours of Cardinal and Black were chosen in 1890 and only the Gold trimmings have been added since.
