History

Seacroft Wheelers was formed in 1975 to cover a gap in the local club scene. While established riders were welcomed to join most established clubs very few were willing to take on new, and especially young cyclists.

Founder members were Barbara Penrice, our current club president, one man and five boys aged between 10 and 15, and membership blossomed to over 50 in just two months. Although the emphasis was on clubruns and enjoyment of cycling, racing was soon introduced and of the five young founder members three went on to international status.

Like all clubs it has seen its ups and downs but throughout the 1980s it was the foremost club in Yorkshire with a large membership, well supported runs and several top racing men and women in all aspects of the sport.

In 1983 three of our riders won the national juvenile 10 mile championship team award, one being the brother of a founder member. Since then many of our members have figured highly in track, road, time trial and cyclo cross events, but we have always encouraged all our riders, regardless of ability, by promoting over 20 club events every year.

Our aims are still the same after 26 years, to promote all aspects of cycling for all abilities, with particular emphasis on youth, for without them cycling and cycle sport will cease to exist and a particularly enjoyable way of life will have been lost to the young.
