INTRODUCTION TO THE GCCC

The Gloucester is a long-standing club with plenty of traditions and history - but not stuffy or backward. Well, we don't think so!

We cater for most types of cycling - our members are involved in general purpose riding to work / town, gentle touring around the countryside and more ardious overseas tours, mountain biking (pleasure rather than racing - generally), road racing and time trialing.

We consider all types of cyclist - not just the categories above. Variety is the spice of life - and variation keeps the club alive.

We organise a ride just about every Sunday, starting from Kings Square at 9am. There are a few exceptions. The rides are split into a Touring ('social') ride and a Sports ride, and meet up for coffee at 11am at a pre-booked destination.

Between January and March there is a fast Training ride for those pre-disposed to speed - be prepared to suffer! No coffee stop for this gang.

For those of a more social bent, following coffee a number will continue on for a pub lunch, others choose to return home. The rides are graded to indicate the length / difficulty of the ride.

Once a month there is an 'easy' open invitation ride, when anyone with a roadworthy cycle and an ability to ride 35 to 40 miles is welcome - you will not be left behind!

Tuesday evenings sees a variety of activities, either at the club room or out on the road. Wednesday evenings in the Spring / Summer we organise club time Trials - individual races against the clock. Anyone can turn up on the day to race - but if you are not a member, you must join for the day (£1.50).

We also promote race events for cyclists belonging to other clubs - these are generally serious undertakings!

With a club as old as this one (founded 1891!), there are plenty of trophies and records to be won. An annual dinner is held at the end of November to award the silverware, have a meal and chat and dance. Guest speakers and the tradition of cross-toasting make the evening.

Social tours are arranged in March and October, involving two nights in Bed and Breakfast accommodation. March is generally into Wales, October - wherever. We start on Friday (early), returning Sunday late afternoon.

We recommend that you come out and try us first - then decide!
