British Cycling's Coaching and Education Department is responsible for producing and delivering a comprehensive education programme for coaches that will eventually encompass all levels from leadership to elite. We are developing a new Coach Education Programme, in conjunction with sports coach UK, that will meet the needs of cycling, be relevant to all disciplines and most importantly produce competent coaches.

Coaching and Education is the smallest department within British Cycling with just 4.5 members of staff:

  • Keith Flory, Coach Education Officer
  • Hywel Satherley, Coach Education Officer (part time)
The initial programme development was focused on activities and products for those people who are already coaching or want to start coaching, either independently or in clubs - the result being the launch of the Club Coach Award in January 2000. Since the launch of the Club Coach Award we have had very positive responses and feedback from both new and previously qualified coaches. The Club Coach course has grown from strength to strength and so far we have trained 30 tutors, delivered 36 courses at venues around the country (with another 7 planned for early 2002) and have over 600 coaches registered on the database.

Still to come are the Introductory Coaching and Leadership Award and the Advanced Club Coach Award as well as a continuing professional development programme and discipline specific modules to ensure that every facet of cycling can benefit from competent and qualified coaches. When complete, we will then be able to provide a structured career pathway for all cycling coaches.
