Mountain Bike Leadership
British Cycling does not presently offer Mountain Bike Leadership qualifications, although we do see it as part of a wider programme of courses we hope to deliver in the future.
The development of an award structure for Mountain Bike Leadership qualifications was initiated this year by British Cycling Coach Education in conjunction with the Scottish Cyclists’ Union and Welsh Cycling Union, but this project has recently been put on hold as a result of budgetary constraints.
There are however, a number of commercial organisations in England who offer MTB leadership awards, and whilst we acknowledge the existence of commercial operators, it is important to note that none of these organisations are accredited, endorsed, licensed or commissioned to deliver awards on behalf of British Cycling.
The modules covered in the awards presently offered by commercial organisations may also vary from one organisation to another. This is because there are currently no national occupational standards for Mountain Bike Leadership qualifications within the UK. British Cycling hopes to address this in the future by developing national standards, which means the awards can then be included in the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).
Despite the British Cycling MTB Leadership project currently being put on hold, British Cycling Coach Education intend to continue its relationship with the SCU and the WCU for the foreseeable future.
In the meantime the SCU, which is the National Governing Body for cycling in Scotland, already has an award which was developed in conjunction with SAPOE, (Scottish Advisory Panel for Outdoor Education). This is award is currently recognised by AALA (Adventure Activities Licensing Authority) as a measure of competence in licensable terrain. SCU tutors deliver courses in a variety of locations throughout the country. For further information contact Jim Riach at the SCU, on 0131 652 0187.
