The South West Region covers the whole of the southwest peninsula and within these bounds there is scope for a wide range of paddling opportunities. There is the extensive coastline with excellent surfing beaches, scenic estuaries, and slow moving rivers in the north and exciting white water rivers in the south. There are excellent opportunities to take part in both competitive and recreational events from foundation, through to excellence.
The Regional Team is a strong broad based team, with representatives from all disciplines, club based members and individual representation. The Regional Team has developed a strong Action Plan that will “make a difference” for the development of canoeing in the new millennium. Amongst our plans for the future are projects to continue to increase our ownership of land on the banks of the Dart and to improve access both here and on other rivers and lakes within the region. To further improve links with the Coaching Service and to provide good coaching for all participants. Continue to improve membership services and support the development of clubs within the region. To work with other agencies including the EA, BW and Local Authorities to provide white water sites at Exeter and Bath and to develop a National Surf Centre at Bude. To improve the opportunities for disabled people to participate in canoeing. To continue to work towards the purchase of Symonds Yat rapids to safeguard access for canoeing. The Team has been involved in the development of training for Club Officers and has set the standard for the training of Local Access Officers. This work will continue and expand so that throughout the Region there will be committed individuals who are well placed to serve both at Local and Regional level.
