Carterton Leisure Centre is the 3rd sporting facility to be opened in West Oxfordshire in the past 2 years - the others being Chipping Norton Leisure Centre and Carterton Sports Pavilion.
The formal opening for the Centre took place on Saturday 29 November 2003. Commonwealth Gold medallist swimmer, Sarah Price, performed the official opening and shared her expertise with young people in a special Masterclass, and a question and answer session.
Facilities at the new centre include a 6 lane, 25m swimming pool with adjacent teaching pool.
A state of the art health and fitness gym is also provided as well as a multi use space suitable for a creche and other activities. A kitchen facility is also to be provided, serving hot and cold snacks.
The design of the Centre incorporates energy saving features for example: building fabric insulation levels have been over specified and the installation of a combined heat and power unit. This is an ingenious piece of equipment which generates electricity for use within the Centre while providing heat for pool water heating and hot water for showers etc. A grey water system will utilise waste swimming pool water for the flushing of WC's therefore reducing the demand for mains fed water.
The building is distinctive in design, being built out of traditional Cotswold stone with copper sloping roofs and boasting individually designed blue glass windows of cathedral scale at the far end of the swimming pool. The glass design is based around a water theme which will reflect the swimming pool water creating a visually stunning effect. The glasswork was created by Sasha Ward, a professional artist as part of the District Council's '% for Art Scheme'.
Carterton Leisure Centre can be found on Broadshires Way, off Monahan Way, within the North East Carterton development area. The Centre is managed on behalf of the Council by Wycombe Leisure Ltd.
