Holdens Archers was formed in 1975. Originally consisting of thirteen members, three of whom are still with the club, the first outdoor venue was Holdens Wood, Warley Sports Club, Brentwood. Within a few years the membership has reached its peak of about 50, and it was one of the largest clubs in Essex, although numbers tend to fluctuate quite a bit. In 1993 the club moved to its present outdoor location at The Society of Old Brentwood’s Sports Club in Pilgrims Hatch, Brentwood, where we have access to the ground at any time. We also have an indoor location Keys Hall, Eagle Way Warley, Brentwood. At present the membership stands at about 27, of whom some 15 to 16 shoot regularly. We have had two members of international ranking, and several members have held national or county records.
Our club shooting details is as follows:-
- During the months of April to September club night is Wednesday outdoors, with either Sunday afternoons or all day rounds with league matches during that period.
- During the months of October to March club night is also Wednesday (indoors) with outdoors shooting mornings during the winter months.
Also during the year coaching is also available.
The club has 5 qualified instructors whose services are in constant demand as we provide archery lessons at The Brentwood International Centre, as well as corporate events at the club, “Come and Try it” at local fetes and various beginners and coaching courses. In addition we are involved with The Association for Archery in Schools and give lessons twice a week during term time at Brentwood School.
The club also hold a charity shoot each year; usually on August Bank Holiday Monday. Called the Hatfield Memorial Shoot, this is in memory of Kitty Hatfield, one of the club’s founder members, it consists of a Double American round, shot over the whole day, with the option of shooting shorter distances for under 14’s. Trophies and medals are awarded for Gentleman, Ladies Junior Boys and Junior Girls, recurve, longbow and compound and also married couples and Teams shooting recurve. All the proceeds of the shoot are donated to Leukaemia Research. Over the past 24 years the shoot has raised more than £6000 for this cause
