The interest in Archery in Guernsey can be traced back to 1875 and we still compete annually for the ‘1879’ trophy. The Club membership is steadily increasing with the popularity of the sport. We now have approximately 70 members, including a junior section of about 15.
The Bowmen of Guernsey are affiliated to the Rovers Athletic Club and shoot outdoors between April and September, enjoying the use of all the club’s facilities. In the winter we shoot indoors at the Guernsey Small Bore Rifle Club at Mont Arrive. With such excellent facilities at the Rovers AC ground at Port Soif, the Club is able to offer corporate days and “have a go” sessions, as well as annually hosting a World Record Status Double FITA Star on the first weekend of September.
As we are the only club on the island competition is limited, although we do shoot twice a year against our friends from Jersey in the Inter-Insular, and the club regularly has some Channel Island Champions in it's midst. As an island, we are also invited to shoot at the annual Euronations competition, and try to attend as many as possible. In July 2006 we hosted the competition for the first time, and firmly, and successfully, put Guernsey on the map in terms of hosting first class tournaments in the UK. Our other main event in the shooting diary is the Natwest International Island Games, held every two years; a 'mini Olympics' for small island nations. We have sent a team to every Games, bar one, and the Club has produced many Island Games medal winners over the years.
