British Disabled Water Ski Team Retain European Title
1st September 2002Britain's Disabled Water Ski Team continued the sports successes in retaining their European Team title and producing World Record Performances in the process. Debbie Cummings, Adaline Fahey and Jacky Stimpson all furthered the World & European records in their slalom categories, Cummings also in tricks, as the UK Sport Lottery backed squad saw every team member on the medal podium in all of the disability categories they competed in.
The team amassed one of the largest points totals ever recorded in taking the title as they further improved their scores after winning the World team title in 2001. They will defend this in 2003 in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
At this weekend's British Open the able bodied skiers on the Lottery supported tournament squad dominated the proceedings. Jason Seels produced a set of jumps in the final that blitzed the 67 metre point to produce a winning distance of 67.1 metre (220ft) to beat compatriot Damien Sharman's 63.4 metre best effort, both ahead of Aurelian Serrault's (FRA) 62.9m (206 feet). Jakalyn Hunter won the women's event ahead of the French duo of Anais Amade and Clementine Lucine.
The French girls got their revenge in the trick discipline though with Brigitte Lethem beating Lucine and Amade to the title. France's Nicolas LeForestier beat Australian Ryan Green to the men's trick title ahead of compatriot Damien Ackerer.
Britain proved their dominance in slalom with three British skiers, Glenn Campbell, Jeremy Newby Ricci and Jason Seels topping the order, Campbell's 1 buoy on the 10.25 metre line taking the title. Coming back from injury compatriot Sarah Gatty Saunt won the women's slalom ahead of Lucine and Amade with the French girls dominating the women's overall table. Jason Seels headed the men's overall in front of Australia's Ryan Green and France's Sebastian Cans.
