2003 Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race
17th April 2003Tactics are already playing a big part in the run up to the start of these years non-stop doubles event of the 2003 Devizes to Westminister Canoe Race .The 125 mile race's Blue Riband event starts on Saturday 19th April.
So far given the uncertain weather most teams have indicated that they intend to start on Saturday afternoon aim to benefit from less wind and reduced river congestion. Strong favourites are the two time winners (1999 & 2002) Jim Morrisse / Michael O'Meara from Ireland who have yet to finalise their departure time until weather condition are clearer, there main opposition Hereford's Steve King / Paul Jones have opted for the 'daylight run' 04.27am start on Sunday.
Each team plans their progress down the course aiming to hit the tidal section at Teddington Lock in time to get the maximum benefit of the out going current to ease their final few mile to the finish at Westminister Bridge.If the weather holds fair both crews might also have an eye on beating the existing course record of 15 hours 34 minutes.
Competitor's safety has been further improved this year, thanks to the sponsorship by Orange of the communications mobiles for the officials who monitor the 350+ competitors progress down the 125 mile course.At the finish sponsors Jordans are sponsoring the Breakfast cereals / food for the competitors
