Baxter reaches final at first English Nationals
3rd February 2009TeamBath badminton player Carl Baxter just missed out on taking the men’s singles title at the English National Championships at his first attempt.
The Canadian-born player has just received a British passport and was competing at the championships for the first time.
Seeded two, he reached the men’s singles final in Manchester without dropping a set. But the championships went according to the seeding, with top seed Rajiv Ouseph winning the final 21-16, 21-15.
University of Bath Coach Education and Sports Development student Mariana Agathangelou just missed out on a place in the women’s doubles final.
Agathangelou and partner Sarah Bok were seeded three for the tournament. They reached the semi-finals but lost a hard-fought battle against number two seeds Jenny Wallwork and Gabby White 19-21, 21-16, 21-18.
Agathangelou was unseeded for the mixed doubles partnering Robin Middleton. They reached the quarter-finals, but went down to number four seeds Chris Adcock and Gabby White 21-15, 10-21, 21-15.
