Zoe on shortlist for young sportswoman award

Team England weightlifter Zoe Smith – one of England’s gold medallists at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games – has been named on the shortlist for a top sports award.
 
The 14-year-old features on a shortlist of five for the Young Sportswoman plaudit at the prestigious Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year Awards.
 
Zoe, from Abbey Wood in London, struck gold in the women’s under-53kg class for Team England at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune in October.
 
Zoe was the youngest member of the England team in Pune and won gold just two years after taking up the sport of weightlifting. 
 
She now hopes to go on to represent England at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games and Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Also on the shortlist for the Young Sportswoman Award are tennis player Laura Robson, triathlete Kirsty McWilliam, mountain biker Rachel Atherton and cricketer Holly Colvin.

The winners of the Sunday Times wards will be decided by a panel that includes BBC 5 Live sports broadcaster Eleanor Oldroyd, former Paralympic athlete Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, sports broadcaster Jill Douglas, and Amanda Bennett, Head of Policy at UK Sport.
 
The awards will be presented at Lord’s Cricket Ground on 12th February.
