British Gas Water Polo Team secure impressive victory

8th September 2009

The British Gas Men’s Water Polo team claimed an emphatic victory over host nation Switzerland last night at the LEN European Nations Trophy.

The tournament saw a big upset earlier in the day when Malta beat Georgia, helping to fire the British team up for their encounter with the home side.

After a slow start to the match the British Gas team just edged ahead to end the first quarter leading 4-3.

The second quarter saw the men settle into a rhythm and slowly take advantage over crowd favourites Switzerland. With better game-play the British team found the back of the net six times to Switzerland’s two ending the quarter 10-5.

Pushing further ahead in the third quarter, the team went into the final eight minutes with a 16-7 lead.

A big effort from the Swiss saw them score three goals to the delight of the home crowd, but the British team matched them goal for goal to win the encounter 19-10 and take the full three points.

After the game British Gas team captain Craig Figes said: “It wasn't a pretty match but we got the three points to keep us in the competition.”

The team are now preparing for a tough encounter with Malta later today. If they win the team could see themselves at the top of their group.
