Third victory for British Gas water polo men
9th September 2009The British Gas Men’s Water Polo team continued their impressive campaign at the LEN European Nations Trophy with a convincing win over Malta in their penultimate group match.
The young British team started much quicker than their opponents and fired home four quick goals in the first quarter to which the Maltese had no reply.
The second quarter saw a further two goals added by the British players before Malta replied with a brace before the half time whistle.
After the break captain Craig Figes led by example with a fine goal only to be topped at the other end by Ed Scott making some magnificent saves to keep the British team in the match. The team went into the final quarter 8-2 up and knowing only a disaster would prevent them topping the group at the end of the day.
The team from Malta, never gave in and scored four goals at the start of a mini comeback, but the boys from Britain held on scoring three more themselves to finish the game 11-6 winners.
This is the third victory out of four matches for the British Gas team who now sit level with Malta and Netherlands at the top of the table.
The team play Poland later today, a victory will see them qualify out of the group stage.
