European semi spot secured for British Gas Men’s Water Polo
9th September 2009The British Gas Men’s Water Polo team have successfully made it through to the semi-final stage of the LEN European B Water Polo Championships after an impressive win against Poland.
The team were on fine form again as they claimed a 13-5 victory over the Polish side to take the full three points and finish at the top of their group.
Showing skill and determination the team demonstrated the level of play that has won them their previous group matches and allowed them to put in their best ever result at the European B Championships.
Assistant Team Manager Joanna Wray was delighted with their performance: “All of the team played well today especially Alex [Parsonage] and Scott [Carpenter] who were our top scorers. In the last quarter we put our younger players in to give them the opportunity to compete as a team and we were very pleased with how they performed.
“Throughout the week the team have been very consistent and strong. They never let their opposition control the matches and all of the members have played exceptionally well. We’re going to have a couple of rest days now and focus on the next match.”
After finishing the group stage with four wins out of five, dropping their only match to Georgia by one goal, they will now bypass the quarterfinals and move straight into the final four.
The British Gas team will now have two rest days before contesting their next match on Saturday where they will play for a place in the final. France qualified for the other semi-final spot alongside Great Britain having come through their group undefeated.
