Kristian wins GB’s first gold at Youth Olympic Festival
18th January 2013
University of Bath student Kristian Callaghan collected Britain’s first gold medal of the Australian Youth Olympic Festival today (Friday).
Callaghan, who is a first year Mechanical Engineering student, stuck gold in the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol shooting competition at the event in Sydney.
Callaghan said: "It was brilliant when I found out that I was the first member of Team GB to win gold at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival. That was only my second-ever rapid pistol final so to go into a shoot out was really tense. I couldn't be happier."
He returns to action in the 50m pistol tomorrow (Saturday).
Twelve-year-old Tiola Gleeson, who trained at the University of Bath with coach Sarah Binding in the lead up to the festival, was a member of the GB rhythmic gymnastics team finishing fifth today.
It was a day that saw GB win 10 medals – three golds, four silvers and three bronzes.
