Danielle Hazell takes 5-34 in England Women’s final warm-up

29th January 2013

Danielle Hazell took 5-34 against New Zealand at the Bandra Kurla complex, Mumbai today in England Women’s final warm-up game ahead of the ICC Women’s World Cup.
Despite bowling New Zealand out for 223, England fell 13 runs short of their victory target as they were bowled out for a 210-run total which included a half-century from Lydia Greenway (51) and a useful lower-order contribution of 35 from Jenny Gunn.
Earlier, Hazell made her mark with the ball after Charlotte Edwards inserted New Zealand following a dew delayed start. Early wickets were shared amongst the England bowlers before Hazell stepped up to claim her five wicket haul.

The Yorkshire spinner first trapped Frances MacKay leg before wicket, then claimed the vital wicket of top scorer Sara McGlashan for 88 before skittling through the New Zealand lower order despite strong resistance from Nicola Browne (40).

After the game Danielle Hazell said: “We are disappointed with the result today. It was good to get out there and get some overs under my belt, yes it’s nice to make a contribution, but ultimately it’s about the result as a team.  We can learn from the result, there are things we will put into practice on Thursday and then take forward into the game on Friday.
“There was a bit more in the pitch for the spinners today compared to the CCI ground yesterday, I think spin will definitely play its part in the tournament. We’ve got four good spinners in our side and we are all going well so there is competition for places, we’re all trying to put a marker out there and push to be in that first game.

“We’ve come out here to win but we know to do that you have to be the best , we’re looking to push on and really put a marker out there. The World Cup is the biggest competition in women’s cricket and India is a great place to come on tour, we’re all excited and ready to get the tournament underway with our first game against Sri Lanka on Friday.”
All England Women’s games in the tournament will be covered live on BBC 5live Sports Extra with a selection of games televised live on Sky Sports.
