England Women’s Academy defeated by Pakistan Women

1st July 2013

Fran Wilson’s half-century and a fine all-round display from Sonia Odedra proved in vain as England Women’s Academy suffered a three-wicket defeat to Pakistan Women in their 50-over clash at Loughborough University on Saturday.

After electing to bat the Academy were unable to defend a total of 174 for seven despite the efforts of Somerset’s Wilson.

Skipper Tammy Beaumont and Berkshire’s Heather Knight shared a 55-run stand before Sadia Yousuf removed both openers and the Academy soon found themselves 97 for four.

Wilson held firm to reach 55 from 77 balls, with a solitary four, and received able support from Odedra, who added 37.

Nain Abidi anchored Pakistan’s successful chase with a patient innings of 65 not out, while Asmavia Iqbal added a crucial 20 from number eight after coming in with 49 still required.

Despite Alice Davidson-Richards and Odedra both striking in their second overs and Pakistan 13 runs short of the target with only two wickets remaining, wicketkeeper Batool Fatima partnered Abidi to the finish line.

England Women play a NatWest Women’s One-Day International against Pakistan at Louth CC in Lincolnshire today, with both teams returning to Loughborough University for the second One-Day International on Wednesday and two NatWest Women’s T20 matches on Friday.
