Gold and Bronze for GB in Women's 800m

Lauren Peffers and Candy Hawkins capped a marvellous Melbourne Deaflympics for themselves and for Great Britain on Tuesday when they won Gold and Bronze medals respectively in the Women's 800m at Olympic Park.

Peffers, 16, who had won Silver in Saturday's 1500m final behind Russian Nelli Erofeeva, turned the tables on the Russian in the 800m final, crossing the line in 2:14 .90 to win her first Deaflympics Gold medal.  

Hawkins, who Bronze in Saturday's 1500m behind Erofeeva and Peffers, added a second Bronze in the 800m, coming home in 2:15.88, less than half a second behing Silver medallist Erofeeva.

"What a fantastic performance from both Lauren and Candy, I am over the moon," said Craig Crowley, Chairman of UK Deaf Sport.   "Our medals tally keeps growing, it's phenomenal and our achievements are being noticed, which is marvellous."

The last day of competition at Olympic Park involving Great Britain athletes also saw Wolverhampton's Matthew Butler finish seventh in the Men's 3000m Steeplechase, clocking a time of 10:08.44, behind Polish Gold medallist Rafal Nowak.
