Fitness Tip 36
It’s that time of year again when you walk into a bookshop and all you see are books on diet and fitness. It must be really confusing for people because the sheer volume is staggering and that’s not counting the celebrities who cash in desperately on this niche market.
I suppose it’s tempting because just buying the book makes you feel as though you’ve done something and there’s always the hope that the “secret” to eternal youth is enclosed. Bad news folks; buying this type of mass market garbage rarely helps and in my experience only makes the purchaser feel worse. The reason is that reading the book (rarely happens anyway) and trying the routines out (even rarer) very often fails to deliver on those stupid guarantees made on the cover.
To add insult to injury you read the testimonials and wonder why it worked for them and not you.
Do yourself a favor this year and leave this trash alone and buy my book available from all good bookshops……just kidding!
To make something work for you, it’s important that you approach it like a business. You wouldn’t just start without any planning would you; you’d have forecasts, budgets, market research, and source reliable business partners and employees. Starting a healthier lifestyle without planning and thought will very likely end up in failure. Try taking these steps:
- 1. Sort yourself out! – This means that you should put your life in order. I’m not saying wait until everything is perfect, that will never happen. Just make sure that you have decided on a course of action for any major issues.
- Journal – That’s right, make a note of what you’re thinking about and write down why what you’re doing is so important to you. Also include any feelings or any victories, I’ve done this for 11 years now and believe me it’s fascinating looking over what you’ve done in the past and seeing what worked and what didn’t. It’s not necessary to write every day, just when you feel like it.
- Get professional help – It’s not absolutely necessary to have it but believe me it will save you time and unnecessary pain. Use the trainers in the gym; make sure you have a review at least once a month for them to look over your training. Personal training is the more expensive option but it is a great motivator.
- Get support – Make sure that your loved ones and peers are on side, this is one of the major reasons why people don’t achieve their goals. Ensure you let them know what you are doing and that you’d like their support.
- NEVER miss a day – Even if there’s a major plot coming to a climax on Eastenders, even if your best friends are going for a drink - NEVER MISS A DAY. This is because working out and eating healthy becomes a habit. Eventually you won’t even have to think about it. When you get those people who say things like “oh go on, live a little” or “your obsessed” or my favorite “go on treat yourself”, head straight for the gym and get it done, believe me you will not regret it but you will regret it if you relent to peer pressure and you start to drop off.
- Plan for off days – Yes, you can treat yourself but only when YOU’VE decided not anyone else. Eating anything you want for a particular meal or even a day once a week will not destroy you. I find that this helps people to be stronger during the rest of the time.
Hopefully some of you out there will give this a go and achieve their goals. Someone may even e-mail to thank me and say “hey Pete you should write a book!"
