PE & Sports Development Conference – Over 50 PE teachers from secondary schools across the county attended the afternoon session of the PE & Sports Development Conference which took place last month at the Stoke Mandeville Stadium in Aylesbury. The conference which was opened by keynote presentations about the Government’s High Quality PE and Sport for Young People strategy from Andy Martin (Youth Sport Trust) and Roger Davis (National Association of School Sport). Delegates then attended a number of workshops focused around PE curriculum issues.
Milton Keynes Schools Football Tournament - The finals of the Milton Keynes Schools Year 6/7 Girls tournament took place on Saturday 22nd March on the Astroturf at Leon School and Sports College. The finals were the culmination of two weeks of qualifying rounds, with the top four schools from each round being invited back to play in the finals.
The football on display was of a high standard producing some fantastic matches, two of which were decided by penalties. A close final saw Wavendon Gate overcoming a hardworking Stanton side to become the eventual winners. By winning the tournament Wavendon Gate will now represent Milton Keynes in the Thames Valley Youth Games in July.
Year 7 Boys Hockey Festival - John Hampden, Sir William Borlase and Mandeville Upper School all attended the Year 7 boy festival on 8th march, held at Bisham Abbey National SportsCentre. Following the snow the previous week the re-arrange festival was a well fought contest. The festival went all the way to the final, John Hampden A vs Sir William Borlase’s A. The game ended in a draw which meant the festival was decided by goal difference. John Hampden won the festival by having a better goal difference throughout the festival.
Schools Hockey League - Twelve primary schools from within the Wycombe district have been competing in a Yr 5&6 mixed hockey league which has been organised by the sports development unit from Wycombe District Council and students from Buckinghamshire & Chiltern University College (BCUC). Each school has received hockey coaching from a local hockey club, (Wycombe Rye Ladies, Kate Porter) in preparation for the league. The schools will play a number of matches over a period of eight weeks against other schools at handy cross astro turf pitch resulting in a final league table. The officials for the league are students from Buckinghamshire & ChilternUniversity College, whilst the marketing students have also been involved in the organisational side of the league. The league started in mid April and full results will be in the next edition of the newsletter.
Active Sports Girls Football Competition - Sports Development Officers from Chiltern, South Bucks and Wycombe joined forces to run a Girls 6-a-side Football Competition on the 13th April 2005 at Wycombe High School.From the three local authorities seven U12 school teams and 12 U14 teams entered the competition to compete for a chance to represent their respective authority at the 2005 Thames Valley Youth Games.
