This Sunday saw the Windsor U16’s last “preparation” game before the League proper starts next week.  With the coaching staff making rolling substitutions all the way through the game it was always going to be tough for the Berkshire side to retain consistency, but with skipper Ed Clemance returning from injury they put on a very solid performance that thoroughly tested the visitors.

All the early pressure was from Chobham, the visitors clearly wanted to make an impression before Windsor could get settled.  But strong work in the forwards from Olly Tomlins and Caspar Hughes made sure that this impression was hard won and the three-quarters looked very secure in their defence.  Unfortunately for Windsor they gave up a penalty for not releasing and Chobham were allowed to take an easy three point lead.

This served to raise the tempo for Windsor and fly half Jonny Whitehead brought his defensive line up quickly on any Chobham three-quarters possession.  A dropped ball in the centre gave Sam Turner (playing at centre instead of his usual wing berth) a chance to pounce on the mistake and fly hack the ball on.  Gathering it in well, on his own 10 yard line, he then out paced the defence to score an unconverted try.

In the second half both sides had equal possession and both sides defended well.  It was unfortunate for Windsor that, with in a minute of a change of personnel at winger, Chobham span the ball out and exploited the fact that the new wing was not up to the pace of the game.  This converted try put them 5 points up, but they did not look like scoring again.

Windsor continued to pressure and despite strong runs from flanker Rehman Grewal and No 8 Ed Clemance were unable to score again.

However the players and coaches will take heart from the overall quality of their play and look forward to their first fixture against Reading next week with a renewed enthusiasm and confidence.
