Windsor “Bs” Battle in Beaconsfield
Windsor U9s B Team gave a fine account of themselves during five testing games at the 2006 Beaconsfield RFC mini rugby festival on Sunday.
This friendly and well-organised event saw some highly competitive rugby played by sides that were often very evenly matched.
Windsor started off strongly in their opening encounter with Marlow as fly half Ben Tidey quickly produced a scintillating run covering most of the field of play to put the Home Park side into an early lead. Marlow rallied in the aftermath but Windsor put in a strong defensive effort until a lapse in concentration and a lack of determined tackling gave the opposition the opening they required. Accounts were levelled. In the second half, Windsor forwards did well to keep a lot of ball and the pressure finally told when Windsor’s Guy Morgan grounded the ball for another five points. Marlow replied late in the game and the match finished a draw at 10 points each.
Hosts Beaconsfield provided the next challenge for Windsor and the boys took to the field with a renewed sense of purpose. Once again, the Windsor forwards produced some powerful mauling leading to hard-earned tries from Tom Berry first and Guy Morgan second backed up by another nippy display from Ben Tidey. Beaconsfield got over the goal line once but could make no further impact on a very determined Windsor team. Final score: Windsor 15 points, Beaconsfield 5.
A glance at the programme indicated to Windsor supporters that the third encounter could be the most testing of the festival in the shape of Henley RFC. Sure enough, the first half saw Henley acquainting Windsor with the benefits of passing the ball and running at the same time! Although Windsor took the lesson to heart and significantly raised their game in the second half with some strong and determined tackling, the final score was Henley 15 points, Windsor 0. A good wake up call for further fixtures in the very near future.
As a rather chilly afternoon wore on, Windsor found themselves faced with an obviously competent Richmond side. Windsor did well to close down a powerful opening onslaught, producing a well-worked counter attack resulting in the first of three tries. Richmond showed great spirit but could only claw back two tries, the last right on the final whistle giving Windsor another victory at 15 points to 10.
The final game was Fullerians v Windsor and it was hotly contested. Fullerians had a hefty front row but Windsor were in no mood to be intimidated and quickly carried the ball into opposition territory, clocking up the first of two tries. It was obvious that Fullerians also wanted to end their day on a high as they ran in two of their own and for much of the second half it looked like a draw was on the cards until a fast break on the last play saw Fullerians edge ahead. Fullerians 15 points, Windsor 10.
This was a great day with a really high standard of play. Thanks are due to BRFC for hosting the event and also to the Windsor coaching team of Chris Addis, Ray Cox and Chris Baumann.
