Windsor C Team – Marlow Tournament Match Report

A spirited performance by the U9 C team was unfortunately not quite enough to see them progress past the pool stage but valuable big match experience was gained by the squad. Coming back from defeat initially against Henley, two solid draws were achieved against Chobham and home side Marlow, with the C’s finally losing against a strong and impressively well-organised Teddington outfit.

Mother’s Day combined with the clocks going forward always meant turnout could be an issue. But credit to coaches and parents that three full U9 squads were assembled. Those present were rewarded with four exciting displays of C team rugby.

Windsor 0 Henley 20

Windsor C’s displayed good passing and tackling against the old foe and going into half time at Windsor 0 Henley 5, there was always a chance this might be Windsor’s day. But breaking from the restart, Henley doubled their lead and two fortunate tries put a win out of Windsor’s grasp. This was a strong Henley team, arguably A or B team calibre, and Windsor could take heart that their positioning was good and they played as a unit.

Chobham 5 Windsor 5

Constant Chobham pressure in the first half  had Windsor on the back foot. But Windsor resistance was solid and the teams left the pitch at half time with the score level at 0-0. An inspired James Thorogood run put Windsor ahead after the restart, but a lapse in Windsor concentration saw Chobham level the score immediately. Play remained finely balanced with the game finishing at 5-5. This was a positive response by the C’s to loss against Henley in their first game

Marlow 5 Windsor 5

Tactical changes saw an improved Windsor performance and the first half was finely balanced at 0-0. More strong running by James Thorogood put Windsor ahead in the second half and Windsor resisted an immediate response by the home team. Heavy Marlow pressure throughout the rest of the half  produced solid defensive tackling, but Marlow levelled the score at 5-5.

Teddington 30 Windsor 0

An extremely well organised Teddington unit had already dismantled several other teams. Combining carefully planned set pieces with aggressive drives, a rout was possible with Teddington going in at  half time at 20-0. The task for Windsor was now to maintain their dignity. Rising to the challenge, solid Windsor defensive play thwarted Teddington’s ambitions, and a typically robust Dennis Applebaum tackle in the dying seconds held the score to 30-0. Windsor left the field battered and bruised but with their heads held high.
