The 2007 SDS 5-a-side Football Championships supported by the Sports Council for Glasgow were held at Glasgow Green Football Complex on Wednesday 28th March. 42 teams from all over Scotland competed for seven national titles. Senior and junior players were graded into divisions and there was one senior section for women.
Four teams contested Division A and the top two teams came from the East and West. The Lothian team took the Division A title with two wins during the qualifying ties. The runners-up spot went to the Firhill Sharks who managed one win and 2 draws for 5 points. Not far behind was the St Aidans team with a win and a draw and a total of 4 points.
Eight teams contested Division B from as far north as the Highland Branch of the Association to the Borders in the South. Teams were divided into two groups of four and after playing one another Fife and Highland topped the groups with Lothian 1 & 2 finishing in runners-up spots. The Lothian teams then contested third place and the Lothian 2 players lifted the bronze medals. On their way to the final Highland scored 10 goals, conceded none and won all their matches for a total of 9 points. The Fife team gained 7 points from 2 wins and a draw and similarly had an excellent goals tally of 11 for and 1 against. In the final 1 goal separated the teams with the 2007 title going to the players from Fife. After an absence of almost two decades from the national football championships the Fife players were delighted with their success.
Six teams contested Division C from throughout Scotland. Lothian players collected the bronze medals with three wins and an excellent scoring rate of 16 goals and only 4 against. Unfortunately two losses excluded them from challenging for the silver medals. It was the Craighead team that finished in runners-up spot with a total of 10 points from three wins and a crucial draw. They had an almost identical goals tally to the bronze medallists. Worthy gold medallists were the players from Highland who won all five matches, scoring 16 goals and conceding only 4.
The Division D competition had seven teams entered in two groups. Borders and Lothian 2 finished runners-up in their groups and met in the play-offs for third place. It was Lothian 2 who were convincing winners by 3 goals to nil and collected the bronze medals. The top two teams were Lothian 1 and Highland. The players from the north continued their excellent run in the championships with a 2:1 win over the team from the East. In qualifying for the final the Highland team were undefeated scoring 11 goals and conceding only 1.
The ladies competition involved four teams from the North of Scotland and Central Belt. Third place went to the Highland team with the Firhill Wingers finishing as runners-up. The champions of 2007 were the St Aidan Eagles with 2 wins and a draw and 18 goals scored and only 1 conceded. A powerful performance by the 2007 champion ladies team.
In the Junior A competition five teams competed for the medals. North Ayrshire won the bronze medals with 2 wins during the qualifying stages. Portland High School on their way to the final scored 14 goals and conceded 7 and were undefeated in all but one game. The undisputed top team was South Lanarkshire with 4 wins and no losses and 11 goals for and 1 against. An excellent performance by the youngsters from South Lanarkshire.
Nine teams contested the Junior B competition and following two exciting round robin sections South Ayrshire 2 defeated Parkhill to claim the bronze medals. South Lanarkshire won the gold medals and Lothian the silver medals as runners-up. In qualifying for the final play-off match the South Lanarkshire players were undefeated and scored a total of 17 goals and conceded none.
