The Braehead Wheelchair Curling team have created a bit of history. They entered on open curling competition, requested no rule concessions and finished the day with many new admirers from within the curling community and their first mainstream title to add to the many they have won in wheelchair curling events.

This team have taken on and defeated all of the world’s leading wheelchair curling teams. Their record in the adapted game is exceptional but this time they proved they can take on and beat mainstream curlers. Their approach to the game is exceptional. They prepare well and support one another particularly when things are not going well. They epitomise all that is good about team play and there is a feeling in Scotland that the best is yet to come.

Victories over Scottish Power, Glasgow Ladies and  Cathcart Castle set them up for a final against Crossmyloof. It was a memorable final with the Braehead four of Angie Malone, Jim Sellar Aileen Neilson and Michael McCreadie coming out on top by 7 shots to 4. How special is it for a wheelchair curling team to win the Glasgow Province “Shanter Trophy”?

Wheelchair curling has come a long way since that early trip to Sursee in Switzerland for that first international competition. In 2007 Scottish curlers are respected the world over and the recent win by Braehead in open competition has done much to enhance the reputation even further.
