WARRIORS AT BEACONSFIELD
By Mark Berry
04.11.07 BEACONSFIELD RFC:
Windsor Warriors continued their good fighting form when they competed in the 2007 Beaconsfield Tournament.
The tone for the day was set by the opening encounter against Newbury. The opposition team attacked fiercely from the moment the whistle went, putting Warriors on the back foot for much of the first half. In the closing stages of that half, the boys showed some very dogged defensive work and good use of the boot to prevent Newbury from pressing home their territorial advantage. The second half gave Windsor the slight advantage of playing downhill on the sloping pitch. This coupled with a more positive attacking attitude culminated in an exhilarating, bulldozing try from Forward Jake Perkins to put Warriors ahead. The game continued as a white knuckle ride all the way to the end with last play seeing a Newbury player being held up on the try line! Warriors 5, Newbury 0.
The next game was against hosts Beaconsfield and it turned into a fine team performance despite a succession of adverse refereeing decisions. Although Beaconsfield fielded a strong, physical side, Warriors were not intimidated and gave a great display of mauling attacks. A great pity, then, that their best scoring opportunity of the first half was lost owing to confusion over a penalty. The restart soon made up it for as Trowbridge crashed over the line to score for Windsor. Beaconsfield claimed back five points of their own but could do no more as Warriors stepped up a gear, effectively preventing Beaconsfield from moving the ball around. Special mention must be made for Fullback Jonno Cowley who was KO’d in a collision after beautifully gathering a high ball. Good commitment, Jonno – hope the head feels better. Warriors 5, Beaconsfield 5.
The final game was against Wallingford. – a team which had proved too strong for the U10s in the Final of last year’s Tournament. Wallingford again fielded a powerful pack complemented by an effective backline, running in three well-worked tries. Warriors best scoring opportunity was a catch and drive close to the opposition 5 metre line but the Wallingford defence held up strongly and prevented Windsor from getting amongst the points. Warriors 0, Wallingford 15
