Windsor Colts travelled away to Buckingham for the final match in their OBB League campaign determined to protect an unbeaten run of league wins since late December.
Windsor were awarded a penalty in the first minute which Nyall O’Reilly slotted home from just inside the ten metre line for a 3 – 0 lead. Windsor then took advantage of early possession as Richard Eccles scored in the corner after some neat passing in the Windsor backs to make it 8 – 0. Buckingham fought back and were camped in the Windsor 22 for an extended period but the Windsor defence was resolute and the home side were unable to capitalise on their territorial advantage. Windsor counter attacked through Ben Clift and Josh Downs broke through the Buckingham line before passing to Nyall O’Reilly who drew the last defender then fed the ball back to Downs who scored under the posts. The try was converted by O’Reilly for a 15 – 0 lead for Windsor at half time.
Buckingham started the second half much better and set up a series of driving malls from line outs from 5 metres out. One such effort was held up by Windsor but the pressure eventually told as Buckingham’s number 8 went over to score. A similar attack saw the home side reduce the deficit to 15 – 10 half way through the second half.
Windsor benefitted from having a larger squad than Buckingham on the day and were able to introduce fresh legs at that stage and from that point on they never looked back. First, Matt Tassell, living up to his nickname “Tass the gas”, cut through the home defence for a fine solo try. Then Windsor were called back from what would have been a certain try after the referee spotted a forward pass in the build up. With 5 minutes to go the Windsor victory was sealed when Nyall O’Reilly again joined the line from full back at pace to score a converted try for a 27 – 10 lead. There was still time for Lewis Woolman to come close to scoring a fifth Windsor try but the ball was lost forward under pressure from the Buckingham defenders.
Man of the match went to Nyall O’Reilly who played with great skill and commitment in attack and defence and, as ever, kept the scoreboard ticking over with the reliability of his kicking.
