The Scottish National Swimming Championships were held at Tollcross pool in Glasgow from 25th to 28th June. The competition attracted all of Great Britain’s Olympic swimming medallists from Beijing, including double gold medallist Rebecca Adlington. Events for swimmers with a disability were also offered at the championships and several SDS national squad members participated.
Great Britain internationalists Craig Rodgie (Carnegie) and Sean Fraser (Warrender) battled it out in the bulk of the male events with Craig in particular on great form as he set three new Scottish records for the S14 class. Both Craig and Sean have been selected for the GB team for the IPC European Championships later this year.
The two S14’s Bryan Ritchie (Broch Seals) and Scott Quinn (Warrender) both made the medal podium with good swims and S5 swimmer Sean Lawrence (West Dunbartonshire) won gold in the 50m Backstroke for those in the lower numerical classes.
It was also good to see some impressive performances from two of the SDS Junior team. 12 year old Andrew Mullen (Ren 96) and 13 year old Robert Dalgleish continued their improvements across a range of events. Both recorded personal best times in a long course pool.
In the female events, Zoe Kane (Peterhead) was the best performer, winning all four of her events. Jennifer Somerville (INCAS) set a new Scottish record in 50m Butterfly and also swam a good personal best in the 200m Individual Medley.
Erin Goldstraw (St Thomas) and Amy MacFarlane (Motherwell & Wishaw), both selected for the UK School Games this summer, completed those making the top three places at the Championships.
