When junior players go to university there is a good chance that they will stop playing table tennis. There are a great number of new and interesting things to do at university and Table Tennis needs to compete with a host of other clubs, groups and a hectic social life. There are two ways your club or league can help players continue in the sport.
- Talk to players about playing table tennis at university. Give them contact numbers of coaches and clubs close to their university. Encourage them to seek out the university and local clubs.
- Contact your local university. The first contacts are the Athletic Union/Sports Office – there is usually a ‘permanent administrator’ in the union you can speak to. A university club could be another club in your league and now is the time to investigate this before the students go on vacation and your season winds down. If you miss this opportunity then a stand at the Freshers’ Fair could turn into a recruiting drive for your clubs noting that not all universities have their own club.
British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) regularly contacts university clubs to encourage them to talk to their local club or league/association. Click here to view and download information relating to Table Tennis in Universities including:
