On the 16th-18th July, the 2nd annual Stirling Summer Skins curling competition took place at The Peak, Stirling Sports Village. 30 teams gathered to compete with players travelling from all over Europe and even as far as Canada. It was a high calibre field with ex World Junior Champions on show and 4 Olympians from the 2010 Winter Olympics. Christoffer Svae and Havard Vad Petersson (Norwegian Olympics Silver medallists 2010), Madeleine Dupont (Denmark) and Scotland’s curling sensation Eve Muirhead (Great Britain) all took part in the event.
The skins format is always popular with teams trying to win money in every end played but also bring a very sociable atmosphere to the ice. Teams try to win money every end which has an increasing value throughout the games. The team with last stone must score two or more to win the skin while the team without last stone must steal the end to take the money.
The final was competed between 2009 World Junior Champion Team Rasmus Stjerne (Denmark), Colin Dick, Jay McWillian and Billy Morton and Tournament Organiser Logan Gray, Matt Ng (2006 and 2007 World Junior Champion, Canada), Katja Kiiskinen (Finland) and Trysta Vandale (Vancouver, Canada). The final was a very tight affair with a lot of shots being made and very aggressive tactics. Gray took a £75-£41 lead into the final end worth £44 however Stjerne pulled off a miraculous last stone – a raise double takeout to score 2 and the final skin. The final score was £85-£75 to Team Rasmus Stjerne.
Great fun was had by all on excellent ice conditions and the competition will run again next year. For more information on either trying curling or curling opportunities at The Peak please contact Logan Gray at Active Stirling on 01786 432323.
