Great Britain Davis Cup Team Announced

31st January 2012

Leon Smith, Captain of the AEGON GB Davis Cup Team has today named his team to face the Slovak Republic in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Euro/Africa Zone Group I first round tie from 10-12 February 2012.

The team will comprise of:

  •  James Ward
  •  Dan Evans
  •  Colin Fleming
  •  Ross Hutchins

This will be Great Britain’s first tie in the Euro/Africa Zone Group I since clinching promotion with victory over Hungary last year.

Leon Smith commented: "This is a real step up in standard for the team, and we go into the tie knowing the Slovak Republic will be favourites. But I am confident the boys will see this as a great chance to put everything into representing their country, and that with the backing of a fantastic set of home fans, we can upset the odds."

The team will be without British No.1, Andy Murray, who’s been advised to take a few weeks off on medical grounds, after picking up a few injuries in Australia.

Andy said: "I’m gutted to miss out on the Davis Cup having really enjoyed playing last year, but as it’s only the start of an important season, which includes the Olympics in London, it’s probably a sensible decision.

"My focus in 2012 is on performing well in the Grand Slams and the London 2012 Olympics. I look forward to playing in the next Davis Cup tie later in the year."

AEGON UK Group Marketing Director, Paul McMahon, added: "Our backing of the AEGON GB Davis Cup Team is just part of the support we provide at all levels in British Tennis and we are delighted to be continuing our support for the team for the tie against the Slovak Republic.

"The Braehead Arena in Glasgow has proved to be a fantastic venue and I’m sure British tennis fans will be in full voice to lend their support for Leon Smith and the team."
