Despite the unseasonably mild weather, Peebles Curling Club are well into the new season. In the Challenge Rink League, the first round of matches were all fairly even contests but later games saw some big wins. Morris Anderson defeated Rob Goodburn by 12 – 1 while David Baird went one better in beating Graeme Coulthards depleted rink by 12 shots to one. The 9th of November was the annual Royal Bank Quaich. This looked to be going the way of Graeme Coulthard who was 10 – 3 up against Robin Waddell Jnr after 6 ends, while on the next rink John Cairns was 6 – 2 against John Brown. However Robin fought back will singles at the last two ends while John Cairns scored a single and a five. This left John Cairns, and team of John Hammond, Judy Cairns and Roger Scott, as the victors on +9 shots. The Bonspiel was followed by a very enjoyable supper at the Kingsnmuir Hotel. At Province level the club started the season by winning the opening mixed bonspiel and went on to win there opening game in the Paterson Rosebowl. Unfortunately interest in the Mendick Trophy has now waned with Rob Goodburn losing his first match and Graeme Coulthard losing his second round game to Temple. In other inter-club competitions that man Coulthard was back in action again in the RCCC rink championship, where he defeated a stuffy Corstorphine rink in round one. The second match against Musselburgh could not have been closer. At the end of the game the teams were even on shots and ends, in a draw for the pot lid Graeme was a pound too heavy and realised that a few inches does make a difference. Having been awarded a bye, Bill Goodburns rink joined this competition in the second round against Haddington but alas will progress no further. There is better news in the Linlithgow Trophy where Peebles are so far undefeated.
